In a novel I’m currently writing, zombies begin showing up after a drug cartel releases a new narcotic that is manufacture from chemicals found in an abounded secrete lab. If a person dies while having the narcotic in their system then it mutates in to a virus taking over the dead corps and reanimating it. That corps is now able to spread this new disease from victim to victim without them ever having contact with the narcotic through any transfer of bodily fluids in to the blood stream. Now instead of the zombie just wanting to spread the virus or eating human flesh (That I always hear debated), its main craving in this book is fresh blood to feed the virus. I chose this way so that the zombies in the book don’t tear apart every potential undead, they just want to suck on them and get their fill(Now if there is a large enough group of them then yes they would tear it apart trying to get a piece like kids fighting over cotton candy). I also wanted to make sure it wasn’t airborne so it would give me the freedom of putting random corpses that will never be reanimated by just dyeing. This concept came to me from looking at “I am Legend” where they were like vampires and to me just made since.
